Bhindawas on 8th January 2014
Visibility poor, so waited till the sunshine was smiling through the thick foggy veil, like the Absolute getting 'as though' dimmed in His reflection through the Individual. Old habitual attraction for a few birding niches on way, now turned into polluted fish ponds, garbage dumps, cricket grounds and so on – made me to pull over my little mobile hut aside the road. A garbage dump produced pipits, larks, wagtails, starlings, doves, drongos, bluethroats – all enjoying their meals the stinking fill-in. My philosopher friend Dr Partap Singh Sangwan would have called this 'bhunda' spot as 'smilingly wonderful'. Common Starlings were really beautiful – reminding me the Hindi songs encyclopedia Dr Sudhir Oswal – bursting into his 'badan par sitare lapete hue'. I bet, my third medico friend Dr Chetna Sharma would have put on her oxygen cylinder .. yelling at me 'move on'
Sunshine throwing away her veil of fog looked more teenager type … over the green infantile wheat crops and yellow expanse of 'breeze intoxicated' mustard giving my aging eyes a life enhancing boost. Blackshouldered Kites were cocking up their tails on the wires… balancing act? Looking for rodents with their ruby red eyes. Shikras too like these perches. Exotically beautiful Common Kestrel hovering a few meters high from the ground..
Bhindawas – don't know why but the birds are declining in numbers and diversity over the years… There is Kejriwal in Haryana govt and no one wants to do sting operations with the wildlife people – millions of rupees have been drowned in this jheel … only to fertilizer the water hyacinth and mismanage the sanctuary. Decided to fall back on the two sadhus living in an adjoining temple; they promised to sensitive the devotees towards environment birding the avian treasure. Will interact further and see if voluntary 'kar seva' can produce some good results.
Common Coots were the most conspicuous birds; Gadwals, Wigeons, Greylags (no Barheads so far), Shovelers, Common Teals, Purple Swamphens and a pair of Black-necked Storks; some Painted Storks, a pair of Woolly-necked and a few Openbills. Marsh Harriers harassing the coots, 3 species of kingfishers including uncommon Common jewel. One Crested Serpent Eagle. Numerous Black-headed and Glossy Ibises. Other commoner birds.
