(delhibirdpix) The Commoners - # 44.138 - Sarus Crane (Grus antigone) - 2014-363

Good News and Bad News.

Good - the two eggs from the Nest No. 1 first seen on 17th August 2014 did hatch and the chicks
survived.  When we expected the chicks around mid-September, there were none.  Our first impression
was the chicks did not survive the heavy rain around that time but then we later learnt that the chicks,
even a day old, can swim and move and hence should have survived.

We had been looking for them in the general area but did not find and therefore, it was a pleasant
surprise this morning to see the whole family at the exact spot of Nest.  The chicks are now about 9 Weeks Old.

Here is another one.

Bad - we had seen the two chicks from Nest No. 4 move about and all the locals had been saying
that the two move about and come back to the Nest now and then.  This morning, the locals told
that now only one chick is being seen and we have lost the other.

We now have 6 surviving chicks from 4 Nest seen at this Wetland area. Two from No. 1 and 2
and one each from No. 3 & 4.

Cheers.
