(delhibirdpix) Terrace Birding

Hi everyone!

This last week I have been regularly birding from my terrace in New Delhi and have even seen a few species for the first time in my area. 3 species of swallow: Red Rumped, Wire Tailed and Barn are fairly regular during mornings and evenings. Yellow and Grey Wagtails can be frequently seen in flight. Also, today morning I managed to spot a Tree Pipit in flight.

Great Cormorants and Painted storks occasionally turn up as do Pond Herons, Egrets etc. However Black Redstarts which were fairly common in September are not seen these days. Ashy Drongos though are still around.

(delhibirdpix) An unforgettable birding moment

We had searched for the Yellow-throated Laughing Thrushes, in vain, at Chumi near Pungro, Nagaland. When we set out on the 24th from Pungro for Khonoma via Chomi, it was our last opportunity to get a sighting of the bird. As we came close to Chomi, thick mist enveloped us and our gloom. Krishnan spotted a bird and yelled 'Yellow-throated!!'. We jumped out of the car and suddenly from the thick mist emerged a 40-50 strong, noisy flock of Yellow-throated Laughing Thrushes. What ecstacy!, even though the mist prevented sharp and clear views of this beauty!

The images, of course, reflect not just the mist, but my poor photography too!!

We spent a wonderful 2 hours watching a Kalij family with 5 juveniles cross a road towards a hillside and then make their way to a back-garden of a house to feed on the grain thrown. The male Kalij was the first to cross.

Soo after the female peeped up carefully to check if the coast was clear. She slowly came up on to the road. She then supervised the run/ flight of the five juveniles across the road before taking off herself. All this happened in a very short space of time.
