(delhibirdpix) Bronzed Drongo (Dicrurus aeneus)

This tiny Drongo suddenly infiltrates the area along with Ashy Dongos from October-March and they are one of my favorite birds. Just the quality in the number of calls and sounds this bird can mimic along with it's fantastic colors, which are disappointingly hard to get on camera and in the kind of light the region gets these days, make it a joy to watch.

This particular bird was imitating a flock of Blue-tailed Bee-eaters which were sitting a few meters away.

(delhibirdpix) Lesser Yellownape and Rufous Woodpecker

Two of the four Woodpeckers I have so far recorded in Manipal (apart from the Black-rumped and Greater Flamebacks).

I presume that these two, although seen almost everytime I visit the area behind my hostel, are not as common as the other two and are probably just three-four resident individuals found in fixed places each time.

The Rufous Woodpecker is tolerant of close approach but prefers very dense areas and is hard to spot - especially since it's most active when light is bad and very early in the morning, though it's peculiar drumming sound and sporadic calls give it away. The Lesser Yellownape, on the other hand, is exceptionally vocal and is almost always seen perched very high up on top of casuarinas and another bamboo-like trees. It does come down, ofcourse, but despite trying hard to give a location to it's calls, I am yet to get a good view of one at a favourable angle.

Both the (horrible!) pics taken on 31.10.2010 in Manipal, Karnataka, India.

[BirdPhotoIndia] Uttaranchal Birds_1_7

Hi Friends

Last one from my  Shyamlatal trip - Oct 15-22, 2010.
To me, it seems to be Jerdon's Bush Chat, but I am not sure as distribution in Krys book shows it as rare one . Requested confirmation from experts.

Apart from the pics posted, we found some more birds at this location - Scarlet Minivet, Streaked LaughingThrush, Red Vented Bulbul, Blue Throated Barbet, Olive backed Pipit, Rufous TreePie, Common Iora,Black Headed Jay.

Thanks

(delhibirdpix) Drongo Cuckoo, Fork-tailed (Surniculus dicruroides)

Hello

A fairly common bird here, and I see more of them as I get more familiar with the species. The monsoon is just about to end, and most of the overgrown vegetation and the woods are being cleared by the local villagers, as is the case each year, and these along with other cuckoos (Grey-bellied Cuckoos, Pied Cuckoos, Common Hawk Cuckoos, and as of today - one Indian Cuckoo) are seen or heard (in most cases!) regularly around the cleared patches perched very still or busy making flycatcher-like sallies for insects.

Also, I was pleased to see and record the calls of a scattered flock of c10 Grey-headed Bulbuls which were not shy but extremely active and always hidden as such from view in a few of such clearings.
