(delhibirdpix) Grey Indian Hornbill

This beautiful Hornbill came to my home in a flightless condition .Kept it for a week fed it  on fruits and supplied water It recovered soon but was not able to fly I tried to release it many times in a wild but it was falling again and again on the ground. Finally  I handed over it  to Delhi Zoo. If any one gets this bird next time at home you can feed it fruits but its dropping is a real  problem  It kept me busy for changing its diapers very frequently (New Paper Cuttings) .But am happy that it survived.

(delhibirdpix) Big Bird Day final Tally

Dear all

A small team of volunteers have been working hard for the last few
days to compile the final team. The excel sheet is attached and the
total now stands at a very creditable 240. This is the second highest
record in the short but colourful history of the Delhi BBD, but falls
far short that the all time record of 271 birds of 13th March 2005.

If any one needs clarification, pl contact me directly.

I have also attached a second file giving the names of all
participants as per the information available with me. Many more
people took part whose names are not with me, and if the find your
names missing, pl contact me, so I can add it to our records

This file also mentions the others teams that joined delhibird, from
different parts of India and abroad. The number of birds seen by them
is given in brackets.

I now would like to thank every participant and well-wisher for making
this years BBD the success it was. Great work by all.
Next year let us strive to make it even bigger!

The best to all

B

[BirdPhotoIndia] Bird Species Count at CKBS- 13th Feb,2011

Hi Sumit da.

I am attaching the excel-sheet containing the bird count at CKBS on 13Feb 2011.
Me and Debarshi started birdwatching at CKBS from 7.45am and stayed there till 11.30am.
The total number of species spotted was 47. But it will be 45 if the two unidentified species are excluded from the list. One was a raptor that was soaring in the sky. Debarshi who had taken a shot of that bird would post the image for ID soon. ...and the other bird was a flycatcher which was probably a Red-throated Flycatcher.

[BirdPhotoIndia] Bird count

Sumitda,

Please find attached as an .xls worksheet my bird species count for today, 13th February 2011.

I started (rather inadvertantly) at 0445 hours (thats when I saw 3 spotted owlets from the balcony) and I stopped at 1545.hours

My count is 44 species. Mostly the usual suspects. One Flycatcher (Red Throated ?) and a Warbler (Blyths' Reed ?) I am not too sure.
So the confirmed count would stand at 42 species.

Regards,

Arijit

[BirdPhotoIndia] Red-crested Pochards, and some memories

Let me tell you of an erstwhile pot-hunter who lived in memory of a world where shooting was allowed, where Pintails and Red-crested Pochards abounded the lakes and marshes, and the forests were full of Green Pigeons and Kaleej. He spent the greater part of his life in Indo-Nepal terai of north-western Bihar – the region around Valmiki National Park and Saraiya Man – a wetland which is now an IBA site. Though he occasionally shot one for the table, I have no doubt that he loved the birds and the forest and the marshes. Even after he had to give up shooting he made sure that he passed on his love. He was never a birdwatcher – but I started learning of birds and forests and nature with him.

He had the misfortune of having to spend the last few years of his life in Kolkata where the lack of wide open spaces disturbed him. His confinement made him somewhat apathetical to life. But he liked seeing my pictures, and hearing stories – of how I saw the Kaleej run and the Pochards fly and the Sambar stand still in evening light. He warned me of Leopards.

A couple of years back I took him to an awareness camp that we hold every year at Santragachi. He liked seeing the ducks again, but expressed frustration about the disorganized state of affairs – about the abundance of telescopes and the complete lack of .22 shotguns. But that was said in jest and he liked what we were doing. He sat there for long, watching the ducks.

My father died on 30th January - last Sunday. It was a sudden, unexpected, quiet and peaceful death. He did not believe in afterlife and neither do I, but I know of the kind of world he would like to find himself in – similar to the one in which he lived for most of his life.

This is one of the last pictures that I showed him. He liked it and mentioned that the males seem to be around a kilogram and a quarter each.

A Long-legged Buzzard gave good views at Dadri Wetlands on 16th almost
right at the start and also as we were winding down but was being
harassed by crows.  One Crow, I think is literally perched on the
Buzzard.

A House Crow enjoying a ride on the back of a Buzzard.

This one reminds me of a  story I used to be told years ago.
Panchtantra ? Not sure.  The story goes something like this:

The Birds decided to choose a king.  Every one threw their feather in
the ring.  Finally, some elders set the criteria - whoever flies
highest and longest, would be crowned king. Next morning at Sun-rise,
every one took off.  Who else to fly highest and longest but the Bird
of Prey. Everyone else got tired and came back except the Bird of Prey
who came down tired as the Sun went down and just as everyone was
applauding, the House Sparrow was seen flying high.  The issue was
settling but it was difficult to accept the tiny Sparrow as King.
When the Sparrow finally settled down and every one started to rise,
the Sparrow raised  hand asking for quiet.  Sparrow then declined to
be the King.  On questioning, she admitted to playing smart indicating
that even though she was the highest flying and longest in the air and
off ground, she can only accept a lesser position since she achieved
the feat by riding the back of the King who indeed was a Bird of Prey.
She bacame the Prime Minister.

Cheers.
