There were a total of at least 4 different individuals of this pipit in Nagrota surian, Pong wetland.

there was variation in the amount of streakings in underparts and the colour of legs.

first time i went to garhpanchkot (close to assansole in west bengal)
with Mr. Caesar Sen
in 2010 january, we saw this bird up close but could not manage a
picture because of
bad light. three years later I was very happy to see at least 4 of
them foraging at exactly
the same spot. i watched them for more than an hour and also managed these shots
in very poor light.

i also saw a white rumped shama and a scaly thrush at the same spot.

Found this relatively rare bird in the hills. The weaker bill (compared to Indian Bushlark) and the white outer tail feathers (observed in flight) helped me arrive at the ID.

Cross Connection

Birdman of India, Dr. Salim Ali, has mentioned in this book about similarities Western Ghat forest & North-East forest... Both are Biodiversity hotspots... In birds some similar families are seen in western Ghats & North-East, like Shortwings, e.g. White-browed, Lesser, Rusty-bellied & Gould's seen in North-East & White-bellied (now called as White-bellied Blue Robin)in Western Ghats, Another family is Laughingthrushes, several Laughingthrush species are found in NE & Wynaad, Kerala & Black-chinned in Western Ghats. No where else in central India these families are found.

Kerala Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron fairbanki) is endemic (Seen only in that region) to Western Ghats, seen south of Palghat gap (Palghat gap is low mountain pass near Pallakkad town in Kerala). This palghat gap acts like a barrier to separate bird species, like White-bellied Blue Robin (seen south of palghat) and Nigiri Blue Robin (seen North of Palghat Gap).

Sorry for not sending this across earlier due to a very busy (and interesting as always) trip to Tal Chapar. Here's the image of the same Hen Harrier after it took off from the fence. As it flew away from me, I could manage this record shot that illustrates the wing pattern. The all black wing tips, along with the dark trailing edge to the wings, helped me confirm this as a Hen Harrier in the field.
