(delhibirdpix) Occipital face of the Collared Owlet

Species: Collared Owlet - Glaucidium brodiei – Adult

Date: 6th Dec.2013

Location:  Kanatal (2014 meters), Uttrakhand, India

Habitat: Indian Oak and Rhododendron forest

Status: Least Concern

Remarks: The false or occipital face of the smallest of owls of our subcontinent. Perched atop an Indian Oak tree, he was mobbed by the mighty and dainty hunters: Black-throated Tits (Aegithalos concinnus), Green-backed Tits (Parus monticolus), Yellow-browed Tits (Sylviparus modestus), Lemon-rumped warblers (Phylloscopus chloronotus), White-tailed Nuthatches (Sitta himalayaensis), Bar-tailed Treecreepers (Certhia himalayana) and the Black-chinned Babblers (Stachyridopsis chrysaea). The dissonance was overwhelming, and their attitude truly aggressive, but the question is whether mobbing by these tiny birds puts them to greater risk of predation or is their safety in numbers?
