(delhibirdpix) Yamuna & Its Flood Plains as Bio-Diversity Park

Probably you are aware, the PM had constituted a committee under the Chairpersonship of LG & CM in 2006 with mandate to come up with a well-considered Plan for Yamuna and Its Flood Plains.

Later, the LG had put a moratorium on any construction in the area (defined as River Zone 'O' in DDA Masterplan 2021) except for the Commonwealth Games Village.  Pity, it did not happen.  Some parts of the Flood Plain have been 'encroached' upon by the State itself with out obtaining the clearances required under the Environment (Protection) Act.

DDA had finally put up a Public Notice inviting comments from Public.

I have put up two files  - one with DDA Concept and the other my comments - to the files sections of the Delhi Bird Group. The links are:

I would appreciate as many of you as possible to write before 26th May, in your own words, a small e-mail to the following:

Besides what are your view, the critical points that may be made, in my opinion, are:

1.  The 9700Ha of Zone 'O' representing River and Its Flood Plains be declared a Protected Area under Wildlife (Protection) Act. This should only be a Bird Park and/or Bio-diversity Park and no activity other than those permitted for a National Park, be permitted here.

2.  The Area be secured through proper fencing.

3.  Any work done in this Zone should be done only after taking prior permissions as required and after inviting Public Consultation.

4.  DDA should make a detailed Public Presentation covering all aspects of their proposal.

I am sure a large number of you would support as you have done in the past.

Of course, I have an ulterior motive of being able to 'twitch' all through the year by having this 40 km stretch  of Yamuna as a birding heaven but many of you share this motive as well.

Best Regards.
