Indian Courser Cursorius coromandelicus
Scaly-breasted Munia Lonchura punctulata
Avisit to Basai and Sultanpur Flats. Anand leading the way with Dr Gupta, Chandrima, Rita and Amitava, With Vinod and Soma at Basai well before we reached. Delhi had some rain in the morning but that did not stop us from birding. Basai had water in the field to the right of the road with a number of Jaccana’s, egret, Likely water Cock, lapwing, blue tailed bee eater etc. The rain played spoil sport but the morning was cool. We waited hoping the rain would give way, at one point the sun was out nice and bright followed by a strom building and coming over head. We decided to go to Sultanpur and then the flats. Sultanpur is closed to the public till the 30 Jul so that is out. Moved on to the flats
The water body was bone dry. The heat has taken its toll on Sultanpur. A little dist we were rewarded with a large flock of silver bills. A closer look-there were the scaly breasted Munia’s feeding on the ground with the silver bills. First time for me seeing scaly breasted feeding like this. Soma noticed Chesnut shouldered Petronias in the flock.
By this time the light started improving the camera speed started at 200 moved to 1000, this also meant the heat was going to make the trip short. Moved on to the flats and saw the grey Francolin, yellow Wattled, chicks, and the Indian Courser. The high light was the Thick knee at just 20 ft away. It flew off and landed some 100 ft away.
Some images from the trip
