(delhibirdpix) Wader for identification - possible Sharp-tailed Sandpiper?

Hi,

The images were shot in fading light by my father Dr. Dinesh Singal at a drain/run-off next to the Tso Moriri lake in Ladakh, India, on 7th September 2010. When I had first seen the pics, I had failed to conclude anything at all, and eventually forgotten about it. Today, upon going through them, I noticed exactly how interesting this bird was and despite going through the field guides a few times, I couldn't pin point towards any ID but had shortlisted it to be a very awkward looking Ruff or a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Rufous cap, downcurved short-ish bill). So I sent the pics to Abhijit Menon-Sen, and he shared his view of it being a candidate for Calidris acuminata; although neither of us are completely sure yet.

According to my dad, the bird was initially standing still and upon closer approach (still pretty distant, nonetheless), it simply ran away. The bird was larger than a Stint/Kentish Plover and since it was at a distance (and standing alone), my father reckons that it's size was probably around that of a Golden Plover.

I have attached two images of the bird with the permission of my father.

Would appreciate more views regarding the ID.

Thanks!
Ramit Singal
