Hi
I went to the wetlands of Patuli (in Kolkata) today morning, and observed the activities of the Pond Herons (Ardeola grayii) near a pond for a long time. The Herons were sitting on the bank and waiting patiently for the catch. Some of them also succeeded in catching small fish and aquatic insects. They also moved through the grasses in search of insects, and scanned the water surface from time to time.
It was a nice experience to watch their activities, and taking some good snaps.
I have always found that most Pond Herons are timid, and tend to fly away when the camera is aimed at them. But the individuals of Patuli seemed to be quite used to humans, and allowed me to take snaps from close range. They were completely oblivious of my presence.
One bird even hovered above the water for a few seconds to catch fish...but failed in its attempt.
Patuli is surely one of the best places for observing and photographing the Pond Herons.
regards
Shantanu : )
