(delhibirdpix) The Commoners - # 92.05 - Indian Skimmer (Rynchops albicollis) - 2010-220

A Bird that used to be common till 1980 but after that it has
disappeared (last sited in March 2003).

No doubt, the Skimmers had to move elsewhere when they could not
locate the prey in dirty water with visibility in to the river being
zero. The stretch of Yamuna River in Delhi, especially the lower 22kms
of the total 35 kms in the territory of Delhi, being possibly the most
polluted stretch of river any where. (BTW, the Govt of India has
already spent Rs. 1650 Crores (USD 365 Million) on cleaning this
stretch with ZERO results.)

Rain Gods decided to clean this stretch for a few days at least.
Heavy rains in Delhi and the catchment area of Yamuna up stream led to
huge quantity of water being released. The 'Gate of Okhla Barrage had
to be opened and this cleaned up all the pollution.

Skimmer showed up albeit for just a few days. They were not there
this morning.

Here is just a 'documentation' shot taken on 28th. Shot at almost 30X
in a misty morning from a mile, as they say.

Cheers.
