Our member, Mr. Indrojit Adak had sent me a few images of an aquila eagle from Deulpur (22°36'23.07"N; 88° 9'40.66"E), Howrah. This has been identified as an Indian Spotted Eagle Aquila hastata by some of those who I sent the picture to. Indrojit photographed the bird in late March this year, but may have seen it again in May/June.
We have been getting reports of sightings of the endemic Indian Spotted for some time now, but this must be the 1st photographic evidence of the presence of the species in our area. Naoroji, in his Birds of Prey of the Indian Subcontinent, describes it as a rare resident of our area.
Congratulations to Indrojit.
Cheers!
Sumit
