Commom Name: Little Egret
Species Name: Egretta garzetta
Location: Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh
Date taken: 07.09.2010
Equipments: Nikon D90 + Nikkor 70-300 mm AF VR Zoom
Special Remarks:
A few days ago I had made a post of a live Black-crowned Night Heron chick which had fallen of from its nest.
The very same day, I had also seen a juvenile Little Egret that has also probably fallen off from its nest. Though unable to fly, it was able to take care of itself well. On many occasions when I tried to approach it, it would scuttle off and hide behind some bushes.
When I came to check upon it the day, I was surprised to see the juvenile feeding upon maggots from the rotting carcass of a dead black-crowned night heron chick. It was still unable to fly, but as usual scurried off to hide behind the bushes when it saw me arrive.
I was happy to see that the bird looked pretty healthy, and looked well capable of taking care of itself. Proves the theory of 'THE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST' to the T, doesnt it?
By the way, is there any documentation of Little Egrets feeding from Maggots growing on dead carcass? I didn't find any, so request seniors to kindly help!
