Mr. Amitava Sen Gupta today photographed a Blue-winged Leafbird ((Chloropsis cochinchinensis jerdoni) at Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary (CKBS), Narendrapur. Based on my records, this may be the 1st sighting of this species from the Kolkata area. (The species occurs on the western parts of West Bengal at the limit of its eastern range).
Earlier local leafbird records are attributed to the Golden-fronted Leafbird (Chloropsis aurifrons) which was last convincingly collected at the pre-development Salt Lakes in the '60s. Kushal Mookherjee reports seeing a Golden-fronted at Narendrapur many years ago.
The image was shared by our member Mr. Subhasish Deb Gupta who received it from Mr. Sen Gupta.
This is a significant sighting by Mr. Sen Gupta and congratulations are well deserved. Thanks to Subhasish too for sharing the important image with us.
