(delhibirdpix) Malabar Pied Hornbills (Anthracoceros coronatus)

Hi

September is the season of Malabar Pied Hornbills in Manipal, with the breeding season done with and the dispersal and large gatherings beginning to appear. Each morning between 0745 to 0830 hrs, upto fifteen of these birds become active around a particular green patch behind my college.

Here is a group of ten of the birds on a single tree - one of the birding highlights in recent times for me, as these bird (4 males, 6 females) busied themselves in preening and wing drying, after a short spell of rain earlier, for over 20 minutes.

In Manipal, Karnataka on 26 September 2010.

Cheers!
Ramit
