visited the Kalikapur wetlands today morning with birder friend
Parikshit Ghosh. I am really thankful to a close birder friend for
giving me the details of the exact location of this bird-rich
wetland....located so close to my place.
We were anticipating to get the secretive warblers and grassbirds that
are known to inhabit these reeds. But we just got a glimpse of the
Black-browed warbler. The Clamarous was quite vocal today, and refused
to come out of the dense reeds.
Plain prinias and Paddyfield Pipits were seen in abundance.
We were resting under a tree in a village nearby, when we spotted a
brownish bird.. that perched on a tree. At first we mistook the bird
for a Pipit. But soon I discovered that it was a seldom seen Eurasian
Wryneck. We sat down quietly again and started taking pictures. It was
my second Wryneck sighting....and the bird was a Lifer for Parikshit.
So he was more than happy to get it.
This strange cousin of the woodpecker made our day.
regards
Shantanu : )
