Hi,
There were several Red-headed Bullfinch couples feeding on the snow-covered ground but they were moving under the dense, 'tightly packed', dwarf Rhododendron bushes and were not visible clearly. They were quite restless too. Most of them were females with yellowish green nape. We came to know that they consume ice to quench their thirst and so we could see bits of snow along with some moss etc were often hanging from their bills.
The temple at Tungnath is at 12,073 feet but we could not reach there due to thick snow covering the path and it was not necessary too, as the Monals come down due to that upto Chopta (2600m). Usually different types of finches, accentors and tits could be found in the ice fields near Tungnath but due to bad weather, we did not find many.
Shot at Tungnath,Uttarakhand,India at an altitude of 10,500' on 10th April'11.
Thanks,
Maitreyee
