The terns it was observed are very reluctant to swim in the water unlike gulls and shearwaters and prefer flotsam, mostly chunks of thermocole and foam but also found on chappals and a barnacle stabilised tubelight in this case. They expertly balanced on even tiny bits looking like surfers riding the waves.
The only times they actually did swim was in the afternoons when they congregated in flocks.
