Hi
visited CKBS today morning. Sky was cloudy and light was poor. There was very less bird activity today in the sanctuary. After spending a few mins in CKBS, I went to Shyamkhola with birdwatcher Mr.Saroj Tula and nature enthusiast Rahi.
We went to the orchards of Shyamkhola in search of the Nightjar that had been spotted by Saroj ji many times on the floor of the bamboo glades. We had some good sightings of Cotton Pygmy goose and Purple Heron (in flight) in the wetlands.
We were also anticipating to get the Grey-headed Canary flycatcher (reported from this area in December.)
Even after a relentless search, we cudnt find any nightjar or flycatcher....but we had a long nice discussion on birding.
I came back to CKBS at around 11.30am. By that time the sky had become much clear. An orange headed ground thrush was seen near the bathtub of birds. It was preening itself perched on a branch. ...managed to take few shots before it vanished into the dense foliage.
Soon I met nature-lover Mr.Ujjal- who had been searching for the resident Fish owl from early morning.
And we were lucky enough to get the Fish owl today. We are thankful to Mr.Nabarun Saddhya- an avid birder...who showed us the huge owl. It was perched on an old mango tree laden with epiphytes. We took many shots of this lovely owl.Soon it flew away speading its enormous wings and perched on another branch. Then it started preening itself for the next few minutes. This was for the first time that I got some clear decent shots of this bird.
We waited near the office for a few minutes anticipating to see the Blue-winged Leafbird, but it didnt turn up.
But a male Streak-throated Woodpecker gave us good photo opportunity.
attaching pics of Brown Fish Owl and Streak-throated Woodpecker.
regards
Shantanu.
