Hi
visited Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary near Kolkata today. At around 1PM, we heard the typical chrrrrrray...chrrrray call of the leafbird. I cud recognize the call as i have heard that many times in the Duars forest (although thats a different species-the Gold-fronted). We searched for the leafbird in the star-apple tree in vain. But I was pretty sure that it was the call of a leafbird.
Suddenly Subroto da noticed some movements among the foliage of an old mango tree, and the Jerdon's Leafbird (Chloropsis cochinchinensis jerdoni) emerged out of the green leaves. It was searching for insects in the foliage. But there was lack of proper light. The bird stayed in the shady areas and vanished behind the leaves from time to time.
sharing two shots of the leafbird. The violot moustachial streak and the bluish-patch on the shoulders are prominent in the first image.
Wish to get better shots next time in good light conditions.
regards
Shantanu.
