(delhibirdpix) Return Migration of Amur Falcon

Hi all,

What else can be more fulfilling when a non birding family tour turns into a wonderful experience of observing the return migration of Amur Falcon at coast of mandarmani,a popular destination for weekenders with perfect coastal mismanagement. On 26.04.2011 around 8.30 am, I was trying to shoot some blue tailed bee eater hunting for a dragon fly in the midair. Suddenly saw a falcon like bird just flew over my head .Within a second I saw another one. Then turned back and observed that many more are coming from coastal side and moving towards east. After the initial shock seeing the 'countless falcon moving over my head' I realized that this is called the raptor migration and the raptor was the magnificent Amur Falcon. I tried to count for an hour which has come down around 108 which consist of adult male as well as juvenile. I felt very lucky experiencing this wonderful bird in such a number on its return migration and moving on along the coastline of Bay of Bengal.

Here is a picture of one of the adult Amur Falcon got on coast of Mandarmani.

cheers,

Dr.Supriyo Samanta.
