Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary (CKBS) occupying just an area of 17 acres is a protected place famous for its wide diversity of birds, butterflies, reptiles, epiphytes, fungi, pteridophytes and orchids. There are only a few places in our country where such a small area of forested land is inhabited by more than 100 species of birds. It is located only a few kms away from the heart of Kolkata. The forested tract was declared as a Bird Sanctuary in October 2005. It was later renamed as Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary after the noted artist Chintamoni Kar who, along with local people and NGO's, fought for decades to obtain wildlife sanctuary status.
Mango trees are the dominant species of trees, and the landscape of the sanctuary and are interspersed with jackfruit, coconut palm, tamarind, guava, ficus, Custard apple,Berries, Star-apple and others trees. A new bamboo plantation has been created for some specific birds. The resident birds of CKBS include Black-naped Monarch, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Common Hawk Cuckoo, Emerald Dove, Streak-throated Woodpecker, Shikra, Bronzed Drongo,Orange-headed Thrush, Brown Fish Owl,White-throated Fantail, Crested Serpent Eagle, Large-tailed Nightjar, Lineated Barbet and Greater Flameback.
The rare avifauna of CKBS include Tickell's Thrush, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Slaty-legged Crake, Eurasian Woodcock, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Scaly Thrush, Tickel' Thrush, Indian Blue Robin, Collared Scops owl,Orange-breasted Green Pigeon, Siberian Rubythroat, Honey Buzzard, Spangled Drongo, Jerdon's Leafbird, Abbotts Babbler,Plainntive cuckoo,Grey-bellied Cuckoo, Brown-breasted Flycatcher,White-eyes,Stork-billed Kingfishers,Rufous Woodpecker,Small Minivets,Eyebrowed Thrush, Forest Wagtail, Yellow-vented Warbler,Grey-backed Shrike,Golden-spectacled warbler,Little Spiderhunter and Blue-throated Flycatcher. There is a possibility of getting the Hume's Reed Warbler in the sanctuary as it was rediscovered near this place few years back.
This sanctuary is a good place to spot some lovely passage migrants like Indian Blue Robin, Indian Pitta,Brown-breasted Flycatcher,and many others.At different times of the year, different species of birds and butterflies arrive to CKBS.In addition, the sanctuary also harbours some mammalian species - like jungle cat, Grey Mongoose,Small Indian civet, Palm Civet, Large Indian Civet,monitor lizard, jackal and others.
