I had not encountered this plumage variation of female
Greater Painted Snipes earlier. Rasmussen's
Birds of South Asia explains that in first year females the head and breast pattern is like a darker and bolder variation of the adult male, while the patterns on the back are similar to adult females. 15th June, 2011, Kolkata, India.
