Male Greater Painted Snipe photographed in April, 2011, in Kolkata.
A few days after this picture was taken, Abhijit Menon Sen enlightened us about the description of the male from an early 18th century book by John Ray, a British naturalist (http://toroid.org/ams/etc/partridge-snipe). The "Partridge Snipe", according to the book, is "decorated elegantly everywhere with spots of varying colour". While "everywhere" is an exaggeration, it is at least true of the wings which are a saving grace for the otherwise dull male.
