Hi
A mail I saw today (I'm sorry, but I forgot the name of the poster) regarding the Spur-winged Plovers reminded me of these pics that I had taken sometime back.
The first one (IMG 7210) is of our River Lapwing, formerly known as the Spur-winged Plover. This image in flight (taken at OBP on 24th April 2011) shows the spurs on the wings and the origin of the name.
The second image (IMG 2008), that of the Lapwing currently known as the Spur-winged Plover, was taken in Kenya in January 2010. Alas! Though I had seen them in flight, and their spurs, I couldn't photograph them.
I understand that a third species, from Oceania - the Masked Lapwing - was also known as the Spur-winged Lapwing for the same reasons - the spurs on the wings!
Cheers!
Ramit
