Hi
I visited the Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary near Kolkata today afternoon, in search of the new guest the Chestnut-winged cuckoo...photographed by birders Soma Jha and Tapas Chaterjee few days back.
I got a glimpse of the bird around 315pm...It was feeding on caterpillars just behind a low branch of a mango tree. It raised its head few times, and i noticed its lovely crest and the unmistakable chestnut-wings. But before I cud take a snap, the bird dived into the undergrowths, and vanished. I am however glad to know that its still there in CKBS, and i could spot it.
I think it will stay in the sanctuary for a few more days, as it is getting plenty of insects and caterpillars there.
So there is still chance of getting this bird in CKBS.
I was walking down the main path, when suddenly i noticed a small bird perched high up on the branches. Day light was fading.
It came down to the lower branches, and i took few snaps of the bird. To my utter surprise, I found that it was a Grey-bellied Cuckoo- a passage migrant in Kolkata area. It was earlier seen in 2009 in CKBS, if i m not wrong.
Sharing few low light shots of the bird taken at dusk.
Hopefully other Kolkata birders will manage to get better shots of the Grey-bllied Cuckoos soon.
regards
Shantanu.
