Hi
visited the Kalikapur wetlands today morningf with birder friend Mr.Parikkhit Ghosh. This wetland in Kolkata attracted birders few months back even from outside the city.... because of the sightings of the rare Black-browed Warblers and Lanceolated warblers....besides other marsh birds like Ruddy-breasted Crakes, Slaty-breasted Rails, Purple Herons, painted snipes, etc.
Now the marsh has become overgrown with tall reeds, that will provide a good habitat for many winter migrants especailly warblers. We heard the loud cackling call of the large Clamarous Reed warbler...but it resfued to come out of the dense reeds.
Plain Prinias, Zitting Cisticolas, Brown and Long-legged Shrikes were abundant in the area. A pair of Wrynecks were spotted. Several Asian Openbills were soaring in the sky.
But the Star bird was a gorgeous Coppersmith Barbet- a bird whose population has drastically reduced in Kolkata over the last few years probably due to air pollution and excessive use of mobile phones. I spotted this bird after a long time....and it literally posed for us on a telegraph wire. Soon another bird joined in, and the pair conversed for some time.
We watched the funny activities of the pair..as they bobbed and turned their heads....flicked their tiny tails.
