Species: Grey-crowned Prinia - Prinia cinereocapilla - Adult
Date: 20th April 2013.
Location: Timlipani, (Nainital), Uttrakhand, India
Habitat: Lantana Shrubs.
Status: Vulnerable.
Remarks: A lone bird was found in the rambling shrubs of 'Lantana camara', foraging in the intricate web-structure of their hairy branches. The movements were erratic and it occasionally surfaced on top for brief moments, on a late overcast afternoon. The song was a long drawn-up 'Cheeeesum' as described, (Fleming & Fleming 1976). This is possibly a very vulnerable and localized breeding habitat, adjacent to human habitation. The reddish dye the bird carries on the brow comes from the vermillion filaments of stamens of the in-bloom 'Woodfordia fruticosa' flowers, when the tubular clusters are visited for nectar.

Gunjan
