A quick report on some pre-monsoon birding in Digboi, assam.:
Although the weather was formidable with heavy clouds turning the summer air laden with humidity, a short visit to the forests around Digboi produced satisfactory results. It was the inaugural session of my brand new 100-400 mm and I was hoping for the light to be good, but the forecast like always failed me. even so, there were some definite highlights-
· A probable ruddy kingfisher. (I've attached the photo for conformation) while taking the photo, I assumed it to be stork billed (hence the sloppy quality), but on further inspection, it turned out that it had brown wings and a pale throat.
· Large groups of capped langurs and assamese macaques. One group of pig tailed macaques and the hoolock calls in the background. Quite a masquerade.
· Both piculets. Both lifers for me.
· The forest was absolutely swarming with nuthatches(velvet fronted and chestnut bellied) and woodpeckers (yellownape mostly)
· Also lots of racket tailed drongos.
· Pin tailed, pompadour and yellowfooted green pigeons were constantly taking flight along with emerald doves and green imperial pigeons.
footnote- if any of you read my previous reports, i had mentioned a dollarbird pair nesting in this forest. the nest has been acquired by hill mynas. the dollarbirds could not be seen today.
regards
maanav.
