Species: Demoiselle Crane – Grus virgo - Adult
Date: 24th Dec, 2012
Location: Keechan, Rajasthan, India
Habitat: Water body in desert.
Status: Least Concern
Remarks: The congregation of Khurjas (local name for DCs) at a small hamlet of Keechan, 3 Kms off midpoint between Bikaner and Jodhpur en-route 'The Desert National Park' is intriguing. Years back, one Ratan Lal Malu Jain started feeding these birds and a tradition of sorts amongst locals was born. Over 10000 Demoiselle Cranes collect here on their migration to India in the winter season. The grain is spread in enclosures called Chuga Ghars where these birds feed. A hundred thousand or so birds return to their breeding grounds in Mangolia crossing over the Himalayan peaks 7800 meters high. Many perish on the way due to fatigue, starvation and predation.
