(delhibirdpix) Eurasian / European Goldfinch

Eurasian/European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) - Was very pleased to see & photograph this beauty in Jispa (Lahaul & Spiti, Himachal Pradesh) in July 2013. These birds (small group of 6) were busy feeding on seeds of thistles plant early morning just by road side, not bothered about vehicles on the road or any other disturbance...

Interestingly, the name Carduelis has arrived from latin word "Carduus", meaning one species of thistle... Male & Female are almost similar except the beak size. Male has longer & more pointed beak, hence only male Eurasian Goldfinch can extract seeds from seedheads of teasel. With its sharp, pointed beak it can pluck even half-ripe seeds, which can be stored & used in harsh winter. It is the only bird than can reach the seeds of the teasels, which are protected by bristling spines.
