(delhibirdpix) kashmir flycatcher dighal 17nov2013

On Sun 17 Nov we were searching for the owls at the canals in Dighal. We saw a flycatcher which looked like a red breasted flycatcher. But the red extended on most of the breast and was coming on to the flanks. The bird was sitting on a branch about 10 meters above the ground, was very still and not making sorties. In the field confusion was between the red breasted ( a common bird) or the Kashmir flycatcher. The large red area and different behavior made us wonder if we were seeing the uncommon Kashmir flycatcher.

Subsequently Nitu has consulted Bill Harvey and has informed me that Bill has seen the photos and confirms it to be a Kashmir Flycatcher.

It would be a lifer for me. If anyone has reported it in Delhi and NCR, I am not aware. It is not mentioned in the atlas. It is said to be globally threatened, with fewer than 10,000 remaining. We would be seeing it on passage migration from Kashmir to Sri Lanka and south India.

Comments welcome.
