(delhibirdpix) Pangot, Sattal and Sitaboni Birding - October 2013

Hi,

This year - we spent our five days of Durga Puja in Uttarakhand. This was my first trip to this state - so many commoners of this place was our first time sighting. Weather was pleasant and little cold (Specially at Pangot) through-out the trip.

0th Day - Indigo dropped us at Delhi Airport on time at 7:45 PM from Bangalore. Took a cab to Old Delhi Railway station for Ranikhet Express. Train departed on time. Had good sleep with lots of birds dream :)

1st Day - Train reached Kathgodam at 5:45 AM. Had a cup of tea on platform and started bargain with the local drivers. With little bargain - Singh ji (Cab driver) agreed @1100/- for Pangot drop. On road - again had some tea with Red Billed Bluemagpie sighting. Stay was planned at Kafal House. Excellent location - plenty of birds around. Rest of the day - had birding around the resorts till lunch. Second half - went for a short walk to Timlapani village.

2nd Day - Early morning getup for Vinayak. After one hour of waiting at Cheer phesant point - finally saw 7 of them from far. Then till afternoon - did birding on Kunchkharak road. Saw and heard plenty of birds in thick oak forest - but photography was not good at all in low light.

3rd Day - Morning spent with resort birds and then by 11 AM left for Ghatgarh. Stay was planned at Camp Milieu, Ghatgarh. Reached around 12.30. Had a hefty lunch and then went for camp around birding.

4th Day - Early morning drive to Sattal and half day spent there. The hotspot of Sukha taal was not that much rewarding. But on road birding was good with Black chinned babbler, rufous chinned laughingthrush and Kalij phesant.

5th Day - Early morning drive to Ramnagar. Visited Sitaboni forest and sighted 9 types of woodpecker there.

Mammals - Sambar deer at Pangot, Barking deer (Pangot), Spotted deer (Sitaboni) & Himalayan Ghoral (Nainital Kaladungi Road)
