--A call from Dilip that he was of to Tal Chhapar for three days and asked if I would like to join him. A good offer is never refused.Started on 10 nov 13 at 0630 hrs for Tal Chappar. The road to Kotputli which is a toll road is pathetic. A large number of bridges are being made with very poor side roads for traffic, cater to this in the driving time. Had b'fast at en route. Turned right at Kotputli towards Neem ka Tana. There was no road that we could see, continued hoping top see the road soon-the next 20 kms drive was on the dirt track with glimpses of a road which use ti be there. The road there after was not to bad with very little traffic. At Sikar we wanted to turn to Salasar directly rather than going to Laxmangarh. A wrong turn and we were in the middle of the town going through narrow lanes barly wide for two cars to cross. You must take the Sikar by pass which is a very good road and turn off for salasar when you see a decorative arch door on the left, this takes you to salasar and tal Chhapar. The map is attached. We reached Tal Chappar by 1420 hrs-8 hrs drive.Pooniaji was there to Guide us in the afternoon and was out the next day. Birding at Goushala to see the Spootted Creeper. As we reached Pooniaji spotted the creeper. A lifer. Some of the other birds seen were the Steppe eagle Laughing Dove, Raptor to be Ided, Sparrow hawk. By 4 pm we drove to the Sanctuary to see the Raptors returning back. Large number of Blac k Bucks, Fox, Marsh harrier, demoiselle Cranes just out side the park near the salt pans, Pied Harrier. Montagu's Harrier and the Eagle Imperial.Morning tea we met the team form Mumbai and Pune. We started with a visit to the park for the-Great Egret, Tawny Eagle, Black Shouldered Kite, Common Hoopoe, House sparrow, Red Headed Bunting, Grey Francolin, Isabelline and Desert Wheatear, Black Drongo, Common Kestrel, long billed Pipit, Pipit Paddy field, crested lark, wagtail, Pipit tawny, Wild boars in side the park and near the salt pan area. Harriers and Eagles were seen. Missed the lagger and red necked falcon. The lifer was the Lesser Kestrel perched on top of the tree with a clear view. Southern Grey Shrike, Common Stone chat. Brown Rock Chat.We made a trip to the hills but were unable to find the place, a wrong turn. Back to base for lunch. Started of with a visit to the Gaushala area to see if we can spot the spotted creeper-no luck, Black Ibis and Egptian Vulture, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Tawny Eagle, long legged Buzzard, Short toed Snake Eagle, Rosy starlings. Back to the park to see if we can spot the yellow eyed pigeons. Waited near the water bodies near the entrance with no luck. Then we drove to the water body on the left and to our joy a flock more than 20 Yellow eyed pigeon. The sun was setting and we made our way back to the guest house.Early the next morning 12 Nov Pooniaji was back and we went to the Gaushala to see if we can see the Spotted Creeper again. The last sighting was for a sec only and not very satisfying. Spent the morning with sighting of the Pied Wheatear, Bay Backed shrike adult and the juv, Starlings Purple sunbird, large number of Rosy, bush chat Pied, Rose Ringed Parakeet, Lesser white throat, bulbul White eared bulbul,, large flocks of House sparrow, Silver bills. Missed the Spotted Creeper. There are four or five birds that I was not able to ID.Time for me to head back dilip stayed back. I set off back for Delhi. An hour later I get a call from Dilip that he and Pooniaji went back to spot the creeper and this time the creeper gave them a excellent view and images. The trip back was fine till we reached 30 KM short of Kotputli. No road and about 50 dumpers coming from Kotputli side and the same number going towards Kotputli- one truck had broken down and we were caught in the Jam for the next 50 min. The trip from Kotputli to Delhi was tiring due to the bad side roads where the bridges were being made.Tal Chhapar is worth he visit. Pooniaji has identified areas around the park which offer excellent birding and as the birds have reported by him over the last few years one knows what to expect in the area. Photographs will be posted soon.RegardsVijayWg Cdr Vijay K Sethi (Retd)PH 011-26491538FAX 011-26490105Mob 9810134504
