(delhibirdpix) Sykes's Nightjar in late afternoon

Species: Sykes's Nightjar (Caprimulgus mahrattensis)
Family: Caprimulgidae
Location: Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, India
Date: Dec 17, 2012

Equipment: Canon 7D with Canon 300mm f/4 IS lens and 1.4x Teleconverter

Description: We were driving through the Little Rann of Kutch in the late afternoon when we flushed 2 nightjars. They landed close by. Despite knowing where they had landed, it took us a good 5 minutes to locate them again. One of the major highlights of the tour and a dream shot for me!

What was surprising to me was that the birds were roosting in the open Rann, without even a blade of grass around. All the day-roost images of the Sykes's Nightjars that I've come across show them close to vegetation.

Cheers,
Shreeram
