[BirdPhotoIndia] Black-browed Reed Warbler | Joka, Kolkata

The marshy habitats to the east and south of Kolkata are perhaps one of the best places in Eastern India for watching a number of Acrocephalus and Locustella  Warblers, particularly in late winter and spring. In addition to the commonly seen Acrocephalus - Paddyfield, Blyth’s Reed & Clamorous – one would occasionally find Blunt-winged Warblers, particularly from the East Kolkata Wetlands. Black-browed Reed Warbler has been regularly recorded for the past few years. There are a couple of records of Oriental Reed Warblers as well. Rusty-rumped Warbler is a common winter visitor at Joka to the south of the city – hard to observe but very vocal. About 3 years back we found a Lanceolated Warbler in the same area, and we have suspected hearing its call on several occasions since. There have been some records of Spotted Bush Warbler as well, several decades back, and more recently in 2012.

These habitats are shared by two Phylloscopus warblers in particular – Dusky Warbler and Common Chiffchaff.

Here is a Black-browed Reed Warbler. They are among the last of the lot to leave and can be seen well into April. While skulking in nature, they are active very early in the morning before the sun becomes too strong, and occasionally come out on open perches.
