(delhibirdpix) Hodgson's Frogmouth 2

Species: Hodgson's Frogmouth – Batrachostomus hodgsoni - Female

Date: 21st March 2014

Location: Dibang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, India. 28.1982°N 95.8016°E, 792 MSL

Habitat: Sub-tropical evergreen and Bamboo and Banana forest.

Status: Least Concern

Remarks: The forest path, a star-walk through the mortal flicker of a hundreds of twinkling fireflies, flashing and fading in the dead of night. Nonstop amplifying sounds from the resonant chambers of numerous cicadas. Calling repeatedly in short, loud 'mieya,' (reminding us of 'miows' of an angry cat), this female Hodgson's Frogmouth was found under the torchlight moving and perching on horizontal branches. Her frail, long facial bristles swaying in the soft breeze. Close by (probably) her mate, shy and elusive too was calling in deep soft drawn out 'khuurrrrrr' but was not seen and neither did we pursue him much. These birds dwell as a small localized population, inhabiting a patch of the forest that could be vulnerable to human interference.
