[BirdPhotoIndia] Pale-capped Pigeon - 3

Pale-capped Pigeon

Simlipal National Park, Odisha
18th May, 2014

This globally threatened pigeon has patchy distribution all over the eastern and southern parts of the country, but has always been a difficult bird to see (barring their surprise visit to RPRC campus, Bhubaneswar for several weeks last year). Simlipal has emerged as one place where these birds can be seen with some certainty, particularly in summer. It was good to spend a morning with some 20 birds near a salt lick in a Sal forest.

They visit this salt lick twice a day – once in the morning and once in late afternoon. They wait in nearby trees awaiting the Hanuman Langurs - which come to lick the soil - to depart, and then come down in groups of four-five birds. The maximum number seen by me on the day when I saw them was 20, though I have been told that upto 50 have been sighted in this season.

The birds are reportedly still there and can be seen with ease any time before the onset of monsoon in mid-June when the park closes down.
