Location : Bilaspur-Kherli-Hajipur-Alipura, UP
Camera : Camera D800. Lens Nikon 500mm F4, VR.
Common Name : Sarus Crane
Scientific Name : Grus antigone  GRUIFORMES: Gruidae

The sarus returning to the nest. The chick swims while the saris decides to take of and in one flap of the wing was across the 30 mts water body

Remarks The next few images will be of the saris and the Chicks. The chicks are just two and three days old and are swimming. The nest is located in the centre of the water body on a small grass patch safe from most land animals. For feeding the Sarus and the chicks have to cross the water barrier to feed in the fields. The water is waist deep keeping the Sarus and the chicks safe from animals. We also saw the aggressive protective instinct of the parents while nesting and after the chick was born. In the first case a villager approached the nest a little to close and the saris was all set with wings fully open, forcing the man to move away. In the 2nd case we saw the dog attacking the Sarus chick. Both the Sarus male and female charged at the dog, who after a few attempts gave up trying to get at the Sarus or the chick. Under normal times the sarus will fly away from the dog and not attempt to fight it.
