(delhibirdpix) Hume's Whitethroat: Juvenile

Hi everyone,

I have regularly been observing 2-3 Hume's Whitethroats around my house for the past couple of months. Among them is one immature bird.

While adult Hume's Whitehroats show very dark ear coverts that distinguish them from similar Lesser Whitethroats, juvenile birds show only a greyish wash to the head that can prove to be very confusing indeed!

The best ID feature here is the grey colour of the crown extending halfway down the back (1st photo). The call is also distinctive...these birds churr frequently and sound somewhat similar to the trill of Taiga Flycatcher, but slower and lower pitched.

I have also noticed that HW seems to have a preference for open woodland rather than scrub.
