(delhibirdpix) Gurgaon Biodiversity Park-28th March 2015

Hi,

Dr. Surya Prakash and I visited visited the beautiful scrub forests of Gurgaon Biodiversity Park this morning along with 30 odd IITD students.

As soon as we entered, an Indian Bushlark greeted us with its flying display. The high pitched calls of these Bushlarks were subsequently heard many times and we managed great views of some individuals that sang boldly from exposed perches. Small groups of Red Avadavats were frequently seen perched on clumps of grass on either side of the walking trail. When approached, they promptly took off, uttering their soft "see-see" calls as they did so.

We turned left onto a thinner trail and soon reached "Malkoha Point". Trilling calls of Rufous Fronted Prinias could be heard from the low scrub as they foraged along with Plain Prinias. A dark silhouete appeared suddenly on the distant rocks that overlooked us. I noticed a faint blue colour when I viewed it through binocs and further investigation revealed that it was a male Blue Rock Thrush! This is quite an uncommon bird in NCR and was also a lifer for me.

A few minutes later we heard a distinctive "tleck" call and knew that a Sirkeer was nearby. It wasn't long before it flew out of cover and perched in the canopy of a distant tree. Mission Sirkeer had been accomplished!

We decided to explore this open scrub area through thin and meandering trails. A couple of Common Stonechats were seen amongst thorny bushes. A flock of 50 odd Rosy starlings flew past; some individuals were starting to sport their pale pink breeding colours. It was 8:30am now and we began to head back. On the way out Yellow Eyed Babblers, Red Avadavats and a Shikra bid us adieu until next time!

The Ebird list for today is here:
