[BirdPhotoIndia] Mangrove Pitta | Bhitarkanika

Mangrove Pitta

Bhitarkanika National Park, Odisha
5th April, 2015

Mangrove Pitta has been an enigmatic bird for birders from South Asia. It was long considered one of the most difficult to see. Some authors considered it hypothetical for India (while acknowledging their presence in Bangladesh Sunderbans). Those familiar with Indian Sunderbans knew that it is heard often, particularly in breeding season, but is extremely difficult to see.  Some photo evidences emerged in the last few years from Indian Sunderbans (the first by Sujan Chatterjee in 2009). So it was surprising to find it to be an easy bird at Bhitarkanika in the right season. It was easier than, say, finding an Indian Pitta in its habitat. People from Odisha have reportedly been seeing and photographing these birds there for the last 10 years or more. Just that this knowledge was not documented and made public till this year, when Panchami Manu Ukil and some others decided to take a look. This possibly highlights the importance of sharing information on ebird or other public forums.
