[BirdPhotoIndia] The Jinx bird - Eurasian Wryneck

Hi,

The Eurasian Wryneck (Jynx torquilla) is a unique looking bird, unlike its woodpecker relatives who usually sport bright colors, this one has a muted and cryptic plumage that's more reptilian than avian spending more time on the ground than on trees.
Its steeped in superstition, used as a charm in ancient times to get back strayed lovers. The method was not charming though, the bird was tied to a string and whirled around!
The bird gets its English name from a medical condition called wry neck or torticollis which is the basis of its species name. The bird on a nest supposedly twists its neck and hisses like a snake at an intruder. This behaviour led to the the use of the bird in witchcraft. The genus name is actually a corruption of a word that means 'to shout'. This and the association with witchcraft has given is the word "jinx". And true to its name I seemed jinxed when it came to photographing this bird breaking it only years after seeing this bird quite regularly.
