News of unusual sightings always excite birders and well most do not wait for the weekend to catch their love. And so along with members of retired association - Anandji and Wingco, unnamed birders who were shirking work to catch a sight of the fabled Black Headed Cuckoo Shrike proceeded to Manger. BTW I have heard so many pronunciations of this word that it was only when I read it in hindi that it became clear. It is Maangar. That little pique aside, birders set out during what looked like to be a potentially hoy and muggy day.
-- Traversing broken, flooded and extremely narrow and hilly roads (Govt's response - what hills? its just stones put on top of each other!) we reached the fabled spot, but not before they had seen 7 Pied Cuckoos, Several Blue Tailed Bee Eaters, Indian Rollers (hopeful ones thought may be the European one had come calling early in the season) and of course Crested Bunting who displayed in all its majesty but refused to be photographed.
The location yielded the Black Headed Cuckoo Shrike, Golden Oriole and even a White Browed Fantail but the photographer in birders remained dissatisfied as practically no one got a clean shot.
So with a promise to return soon, the birder bid adieu Manger.
