(delhibirdpix) Blue-cheeked Bee-eater - nesting

The status of the breeding of the Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (Merops persicus)  & Blue-tailed Bee-eater (Merops philippinus) in and around Delhi is shrouded in some confusion. Nesting of Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters has been documented from around Sultanpur sanctuary over a hundred years ago. Earlier in 20th century, there are also some observations of their nesting from around Yamuna. Blue-tailed Bee-eater has always been thought to be a passage migrant through our region; to and fro to their summer breeding areas in the Himalayan foothills. Both species have now been documented breeding in fairly large numbers at nesting holes excavated in mud banks around the Mangar region of the ridge.
