On August 11th around 10 am, an excited wren sang atop the slate tiled roof of a house in Chitkul. He warbled and jumbled loud trills across the roaring Baspa river. Such was his ardent fervor that we were immediately drawn towards it. There he was with stubby tail drawn back, some 20 ft. up on the edge of the roof wedge, singing his heart out. He twitched his body and dipped his legs when he paused. His song lasted 7-9 seconds and often the pause 15-20 seconds.
Soon another wren appeared carrying food and went inside a cavity of a stone wall. New life had arrived and sure it was a moment to rejoice. This day we learnt that only female wrens feed the young and also remove faecal sacs, while the males sing from rooftops, songs of passion like little proud dons (although they don't know they are little).
That day we had confronted a bunch of village kids carrying sparrow fledglings, so not wanting to disclose the location of the nest we moved away.
August 14th we again visited Chitkul and our don was ranting from another rooftop, and the female seen carrying food to the cavity. So all seemed well.
On August 15th while moving into the village from the rear we found our new life 10 meters from the nest, and fondly named him 'Lanthu'. It was his first day out of the nest. His dad still kept singing, while the mom laboured to feed and find the often losable kid. Once the excited dad did try to feed him and botched up by ineptly passing the food from underneath.
How many eggs were laid and what happened to the rest, we will never know.
But our 'Lanthu' survived and we must rejoice.
