Hi,
The place was near Kayakata where we reached late in the morning of 5th April'10.The rhododendrons were in full bloom every where and we expected some birds in them but since it was a little late for birdwatching, we were not getting anybody. Suddenly ,I heard a low 'pick..pick' sound like the calls of Fulvous-breasted Woodpeckers that I always hear at my home.I had to wait there for nearly half an hour, changing my body weight from one leg to the other because my legs were aching by that time due to four hours of early morning bird watching on the boulder strewn forest paths . Suddenly, the tempo of that call increased and it went on like 'pickpickpickpickpickpickpickpickpick....' without any pause and I thought , I might be wrong and it was not a woodpecker but a different bird but then my luck favoured and I could see this beauty . By that time my friends returned empty-handed and so all of us got very happy and excited to see this Darjeeling Woodpecker right in front of us. It might be a mating call but we were not sure of that. We enjoyed its busy activities..sipping nectar from the flowers, pecking at the bark of the branches etc.. to our hearts' content for some time before riding in our rickety Land Rover with all smiles on our faces!
Regards,
Maitreyee
