Dear all:
We were witness to this gruesome incident on Pirotan Island (off the Jamnagar coast). We had seen single Red-necked Phalaropes chased by house crows a couple of times but never thought that that they were deliberately hunted for food till we saw this episode unfold in front of us. The phalarope was possibly exhausted from (reverse) migration and settled on the water to try and escape from the crows. The crows (hunting in a pack like wild dogs) kept crowding the little bird and finally one crow lifted it clean off the water with its 'talon's and flew toward the shore. Krishnan, Arpit and I had taken three different positions preparing for the rising tide and shot this very disturbing incident from three angles.
