Vinay, you were right.
Following the postings of a couple of other Calcutta birders with photos of the cuckoo in which the tail shows, it has now been confirmed that the pictures Sushmita and I had posted on 8th Apr was a Large Hawk Cuckoo.Sumit right from the start, thought it was so but needed to see its tail pattern before confirming.
Once again ChintamaniKar Sanctuary proves an avian treasure trove - what with a Rusty-tailed Flycatcher too finding its way there !

At least it seems to match up with most of Pam's description - "Larger
and darker than Common with black chin, browner upperparts, chestnut
breast with dark streaks and heavier barring on flank; subadult dark
brown above, coarsely streaked below."
